Chiropractic is a health care profession specialising in the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of disorders of the neuromusculoskeletal system and the effects of these disorders on general health (http://www.chiropractic.co.za). There is a highlighting of the manual techniques, including joint adjustment and/or manipulation with a particular focus on the correction of vertebral joint restrictions.

It is further described as a profession where the key contribution to health is through the assessment and treatment of neuromusculoskeletal disorders as well as the counselling of patients by means of other lifestyle issues such as diet, exercise, nutrition and stress management.

Chiropractors are educated as Primary Contact physicians and are therefore trained to thoroughly assess and diagnose their patients before deciding whether the patient is suitable for Chiropractic care or needs to be referred to an appropriate health care provider.
